The Serapi mat is made in Heriz, a city in northeastern Iran not a long way from Tabriz (a city globally known for mat weaving greatness). Serapi rugs were given the term "Serapi" to denote high-quality rugs produced in Heriz prior to 1900. Look for huge geometric medallions crisply outlined with a bright crimson, rust, or dark blue field in a typical serapi rug. A modern serapi rug's hand knotted design may include light or dark pink, light or dark blue, greens, yellows, or ivory.
