Ardabil carpets are made in Ardabil, which is located 639 kilometers north of Tehranin the Ardabil Province of Iran. Ardabil has a rich and famous rug-weaving tradition.

Ardabil (Bow-Tie Motif Rug) carpets have designs that are comparable to Caucasianrugs, but have additional motifs and objects woven in the borders. In addition, thecolors are lighter. The patterns are mostly geometric, and medallions, severalconnected diamond-shaped medallions, and all-over octagonal designs with themost popular layouts on Ardabil rugs. The iconic Mahi (Herati) design, which featuresa diamond medallion and small fish throughout, is the most well-known motif foundon Ardabil rugs.
